JOHN MCKAY

* Born: July 5, 1923 in Everettsville, W.Va.

* Died: June 10, 2001 in Tampa, due to kidney failure because of complications from diabetes.

* Military Service: Army Air Corps during World War II.

* Playing Career: Entered Purdue University, then transferred to the University of Oregon, where he was a three-year letterman and started two seasons (1948, 1949) at halfback. Set a school record for yards per carry (6.4).

* Assistant Coach: Served as assistant at Oregon and the University of Southern California before becoming the Trojans' head coach in 1960.

* USC Coach: McKay was 127-40-8 in 16 years. He had three unbeaten seasons, four national championships (1962, 1967, 1972, 1974), nine Pac-8 championships. He coached 40 first-team All-Americans and two Heisman Trophy winners (Mike Garrett, O.J. Simpson). He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1988.

* Tampa Bay Buccaneers Coach: McKay left USC after the 1975 to coach the NFL expansion Bucs, who opened with 26 consecutive defeats. The Bucs won their first game on Dec. 11, 1977, beating the New Orleans Saints 33-14. McKay guided three playoff teams - 1979 (10-6, NFC Central title); 1981 (9-7, NFC Central title); and 1982 (5-4, strike-shortened season). The 1979 Bucs defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 24-17 in the NFC semifinals, then lost at home to the Los Angeles Rams 9-0 in the NFC Championship Game. Overall, McKay was 44-88-1 in nine NFL seasons. He served the 1985 season as team president before retiring.
