Owner Stuart Sternberg was among the 150 Rays employees who spent Saturday building a playground at the Sanderlin Family Center, which is a short drive from Tropicana Field.
Sternberg also took a few minutes to answer questions.
On Carl Crawford's seven-year, $142 million contract with the Red Sox:
"God bless him, good luck to him and I'm thrilled we and he were able to put him in a position to take care of his family for generations to come."
On if the Rays can be competitive in 2011:
"I believe we can be competitive, sure. If the prices were different, it would be easier. Prices being what they are makes it harder. It doesn't put it out of the realm of possibility.
On the difficulty of staying competitive:
"We're going to put the best team on the field we can. And when I say 'we can,' last year we put the best team on the field we could. We couldn't afford it, but we did it. And we're going to put the best team on the field we can this year ... the best team we can do or what we think is the smart thing we can do. ... We go into every year assuming the Yankees and Red Sox, in particular, are going to put World Series-caliber teams on the field."
On his reaction to the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce's plan to create a study group to research financing for a new stadium:
"I think any discussion is good discussion, and the thing that gives me some optimism is that it comes from the business side of things. When we took our large swing at a stadium a few years ago, the business side was just not there to help support the initiative. ... To see the businesses getting together to try to lead this initiative I think is an optimistic sign."
