Canada may be calling Bolts' Stamkos, St. Louis

Normally, news of Ducks C Ryan Getzlaf injuring his left ankle in a game against the Kings on Monday wouldn't generate much interest in Tampa Bay. But these are not normal times.

With the start of the 2012 Olympics around the corner, Getzlaf's injury may force Team Canada to bring in a replacement, and the Lightning have at least two viable options in Steven Stamkos and Marty St. Louis.

So far, neither player has been contacted by Team Canada, but the fact that both have been among the league's hottest scorers lately could put them at the top of the reinforcement list.

"I know that when those guys pick (their team) they (are) always (aware) of who's hot two weeks before the Olympics," Lightning coach Rick Tocchet said, "because the really elite players, when they're hot ..."

Stamkos and St. Louis accounted for all of the Lightning scoring Tuesday, with Stamkos scoring the first goal on an assist from St. Louis, who scored two goals, the second off a feed from Stamkos.

Stamkos has eight goals and eight assists in his past 10 games. St. Louis, meanwhile, has seven goals and four assists in his past six.

Olympic hockey teams are governed by the International Ice Hockey Federation, which allows teams to make changes to their roster through Monday but for injury purposes only.

Getzlaf is being listed as day-to-day by the Ducks, who also had an MRI performed on Getzlaf's knee to ensure that no damage was done to that joint. The MRI was negative.

Experience pays off

All those years that veteran Lightning D Mattias Ohlund spent playing with Henrik and Daniel Sedin paid dividends Tuesday when the Canucks' top two scorers were held in check during Tampa Bay's 3-1 victory.

Though the twins combined for 15 shots, only a third of those made it through to the net as Ohlund led a five-man unit that succeeded in shutting them down.

"He knew all the little tricks they use and he kind of gave me a heads up on it," fellow Lightning D Mike Lundin said of Ohlund. "Things like how you think they're going to cycle the puck and then they throw it back at the net - we were ready for those kinds of plays tonight."

It wasn't just Ohlund and Lundin shutting the twins down. Forwards Nate Thompson, Ryan Malone and Jeff Halpern also were charged with stifling the twins, and Tocchet lauded their effort.

"They did a real good job of shutting the twins down," Tocchet said of the Thompson line, which finished with an even plus-minus rating. "Our five-man units were good against those guys tonight."

Time heals

It's been well over a year since D Shane O'Brien last wore a Lightning uniform, and time has clearly healed the sting he felt when he was suddenly traded 16 months ago to Vancouver.

"As for any hard feelings, I think it's been so long that it's passed," O'Brien said Tuesday. "It's worked out well for me, but there is still a part of me that wonders what would have happened if I had stayed here.

"At the time, I looked at the defense we had and I was really shocked. I think if they look back at last year, they didn't have the year they wanted so maybe they regretted it a little."

Insurance policy

The Lightning added some depth Tuesday when they signed 10-year NHL veteran forward Mark Parrish to a one-year, two-way contract.

Parrish, 33, was immediately assigned to the Norfolk Admirals, the Lightning's American Hockey League affiliate. Parrish has been with the Admirals on a tryout basis.

The 5-foot-11, 200 pounder has played in 704 NHL games with the Florida Panthers, New York Islanders, Los Angeles Kings, Minnesota Wild and Dallas Stars. He has 216 goals and 169 assists.

Nuts and bolts

Halpern played in his 700th career game. ... Stamkos needs two more power-play goals to set the franchise record for most in a season. The record of 16 is shared by Brian Bradley and Vinny Lecavalier.
