Kentucky holds off Vanderbilt

John Wall sank a pair of free throws with 20 seconds left and had a big blocked shot to send No. 2 Kentucky to a 58-56 win against No. 17 Vanderbilt on Saturday night.

Kentucky (26-1, 11-1 SEC) grabbed a two-game lead against Vanderbilt in the SEC East and dealt the Commodores (20-6, 9-3) their first home loss this season.

Wall's free throws gave the Wildcats a 57-53 lead, but John Jenkins answered with a 3-pointer to pull Vanderbilt within a point.

Kentucky's Eric Bledsoe missed a pair of free throws, but Wall responded by blocking a 3-point try by Jenkins on the other end and grabbing the ball.

He made one of two free throws for a two-point lead with 2.5 seconds to play, and the Commodores had one more chance.

A.J. Ogilvy caught a long inbound pass, but his runner in the lane bounced off the rim at the buzzer.

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Freshman Xavier Henry scored 24 points to lead Kansas (26-1, 12-0 Big 12) past Colorado (12-14, 3-9).

Tyshawn Taylor, back in the starting lineup after a nine-game absence, had 17 points for the Jayhawks.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Robbie Hummel had 22 points and 12 rebounds, and Purdue (23-3, 11-3 Big Ten) finished strong to beat Illinois (17-10, 9-5) for its ninth straight win.

E'Twaun Moore added 18 points and Keaton Grant scored 13 of his season-high 15 points in the second half for the Boilermakers.

NORMAN, Okla. - Denis Clemente scored 27 points, propelling Kansas State (22-4, 9-3 Big 12) past Oklahoma (13-13, 4-8).

The Wildcats won their fifth straight away game, keeping top-ranked Kansas from clinching at least a share of the Big 12 regular-season title.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Kevin Jones and Devin Ebanks scored 16 points apiece and West Virginia (21-5, 10-4 Big East) overcame Seton Hall (15-10, 6-8).

Da'Sean Butler added 14 points for West Virginia.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Darrington Hobson scored 17 points, including a putback with 16.9 seconds remaining, and Dairese Gary made two free throws with 2.5 seconds left and New Mexico (25-3, 11-2 Mountain West) beat feisty Air Force (9-16, 1-11).

The Lobos won their school-record 11th straight in conference play and earned the school's best record through 28 games.

LUBBOCK, Texas - Gary Johnson scored a career-high 22 points to lead Texas (21-6, 7-5 Big 12) past Texas Tech (16-10, 4-8).

The Longhorns led by 13 points in the second half then held off a late-game surge by Nick Okorie, who scored 11 straight points for the Red Raiders to pull them within 69-67 with 58 seconds left.

LARAMIE, Wyo. - Jimmer Fredette and freshman Tyler Haws both scored 22 points and BYU (25-3, 10-2 Mountain West) rolled past Wyoming (2-11, 9-18).

The Cougars led comfortably the entire way to stay within a half game of first-place and 12th-ranked New Mexico.

INDIANAPOLIS - Shelvin Mack scored 23 points and Gordon Hayward added 15, leading Butler (25-4) past Siena (22-6), extending the nation's longest winning streak to 17.

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Bobby Maze matched his season high with 16 points and Tennessee (20-6, 8-4 SEC) reached 20 victories for the fifth straight season by beating South Carolina (14-12, 5-7).

The Vols needed a late 17-3 run to pull out their seventh straight win vs. South Carolina.

PHILADELPHIA - Ramone Moore had 24 points and nine rebounds as Temple (22-5, 10-2 Atlantic 10) beat city rival Saint Joseph's (9-18, 3-10) in overtime.

The Owls swept the season series against the Hawks, defeating them for the seventh consecutive time.

STILLWATER, Okla. - James Anderson matched his season high with 31 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as Oklahoma State (19-7, 7-5 Big 12) beat Baylor (20-6, 7-5).

Keiton Page added 22 points for the Cowboys, who have won three in a row.

RALEIGH, N.C. - Farnold Degand hit two 3-pointers in the decisive second-half run that helped North Carolina State (15-13, 3-10 ACC) beat Wake Forest (18-7, 8-5).

AMES, Iowa - Donald Sloan scored 14 points and Texas A&M (19-7, 8-4 Big 12) held off Iowa State (13-14, 2-10) for its fifth win in six games.

RICHMOND, Va. - Kevin Anderson had 24 points to lead Richmond (22-6, 11-2 Atlantic 10) past George Washington (14-11, 4-8).

MIAMI SHORES - Despite a game-high 24 points by Tampa's Rashad Callaway, the Spartans (10-14, 4-11 SSC) fell to Barry (16-9, 7-7). Also for Tampa, Ted Amendola and Anthony LaBruno had 12 points apiece and Glyn Hunter added 10.

Magee ties Knight with 902nd win

WATERBURY, Conn. - Philadelphia University basketball coach Herb Magee won his 902nd game Saturday to tie Bob Knight for the most victories by a men's coach in NCAA history. The Division II Rams defeated Post 70-67.

Magee is 902-352 in 43 years at Philadelphia and can surpass Knight (902-371) on Tuesday.
