Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman apparently will turn to his former team to fill a key spot for his new team.
Red Wings general manager Ken Holland told media outlets in Detroit that Yzerman has asked for permission to speak to Ryan Martin, Detroit's director of hockey administration, about an assistant general manager position with Tampa Bay.
Martin is primarily responsible for managing Detroit's salary cap, and he is reportedly close to Yzerman.
When Yzerman was hired by Tampa Bay last week, he said he would like to find someone to help him manage the salary cap and negotiate player contracts. He mentioned Martin's name a handful of times during his 30-minute introductory news conference.
The Lightning did not respond to the reports Wednesday.
Yzerman also is in the midst of a coaching search that reportedly includes Kevin Dineen, coach of the Buffalo Sabres' AHL affiliate in Portland, Maine. The Columbus Dispatch reported last week that Yzerman asked the Sabres for permission to speak to Dineen.
Also believed to be in the mix are Manitoba (AHL) coach Scott Arniel, Hamilton (AHL) coach Guy Boucher, and Bob Boughner, who led the OHL's Windsor Spitfires to consecutive Memorial Cup championships.
No timetable has been established for hiring a coach. Yzerman said it would be ideal to hire someone before the June 25-26 NHL draft, but it is not imperative.
