Griffin injury depletes Bulls' receiving depth

USF sophomore receiver Sterling Griffin, expected to be a major contributor this fall, suffered a fractured and dislocated right ankle during voluntary workouts Monday.

Griffin was transported by ambulance to University Community Hospital on Monday morning after hurting the ankle during conditioning drills. He was later released, but X-rays revealed the severity of the injury.

As a freshman last season, Griffin started 10 games and caught 14 passes for 265 yards and two touchdowns, included a 73-yard touchdown reception in USF's 17-7 win at Florida State.

With Carlton Mitchell opting to skip his final season for the NFL and senior A.J. Love expected to miss a significant chunk of next season due to a knee injury he suffered in the spring game, Griffin's injury depletes an already thin receiving corps.

USF officials said Griffin will be further evaluated today by team doctors to determine a final prognosis and what step to take next.

In other news, former Memphis guard Roburt Sallie signed with Louisville on Monday. After announcing he was transferring from Memphis, USF recruited Sallie heavily and received a verbal commitment.

However, USF's academic committee denied Sallie entry based on his transcript. According to Louisville officials, Sallie still must clear some academic hurdles to enroll in class and join the Cardinals.
