You grew up in Miami. What's more popular, baseball or football?
You got the U for football, everyone knows that. But (the University of) Miami is also good in baseball. A lot of good football players come from Miami. So do a lot of good baseball players. I'd say it's even.
If you weren't a baseball player, what do you think you would be doing?
Trying to play football, that's for sure. I probably shouldn't say this, but after I signed (with the Angels in 2003), I played a lot of flag football until I cracked the big leagues in '08. I know I couldn't be physical, but I loved it. I loved the running around. You try to stay in control, but there are times when your competitiveness takes over.
What position would you play in football?
DB, safety, wide receiver. I have good hands. I can catch anything that's put in my hands.
What is your favorite moment as a baseball player?
Major-league debut. It's tough to explain. It's what you dreamed about since you were a kid. You want to be a big-leaguer, but you know it might not be possible. So when it happens, you're like, 'Wow! I did it.'
How did you do?
It was against Seattle, April 18, 2008. Jarrod Washburn was pitching. I was 1-for-4. Got my knock. Actually, I hit it right at Raul Ibanez in left field. I trained with him the previous three offseasons. He was smiling, too, when he got the ball. I could see him. He was all excited for me.
