GO FISHING is a look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Mike Anderson, right, with "Reel Animals" partner Billy Nobles.
High winds, rain and cold temperatures lead to poor fishing conditions, though some die-hards claim to have done fairly well at the power plant outflows. Cobia, blacktip sharks, ladyfish and trout were caught.
There is a warm-up in the forecast, and just in time. They are calling for a week of weather in the 70s, which could turn things loose. The big trout will be active in 3 to 4 feet of water. They have eaten the minimum for survival for months and they should really come alive when it warms up.
The redfish schools that poured in on this past moon phase should also start to get acclimated to the shallows and get into more of a normal feeding pattern.
There are also some chances to catch big sheepshead as they seemed to pour onto the flats with this past moon. The slightly warmer water will get these guys to fire off. A shrimp on a No. 1 hook with a small split shot about 15 inches up the leader will work great.
A warming trend should drive some of our bait back to the bridges and piers and out of the deep water.
Catch Billy Nobles and Mike Anderson on the "Reel Animals Fishing Show" on Saturdays from 6:30-7 a.m. on WFLA, Ch. 8, and from 6-9 a.m. on 970 AM, and on Sundays from 7-9 a.m. on 620 AM. To book a charter, call 1-866-GAMEFISH or visit www.reelanimals
