Bolts assuming Ranger won't play this season

Two weeks before training camp, what the Lightning have on the team's roster is the group that will start training camp. That includes one noticeable absence - defenseman Paul Ranger.

Tampa Bay general manager Steve Yzerman said Wednesday that after speaking with Ranger recently, the team intends to move forward under the assumption Ranger will not be playing this season. Ranger has been away from the team since October when he was granted a leave of absence by the team for personal reasons, and hasn't returned.

"But that door is open if he wants to come back," Yzerman said.

Ranger, 25, has scored 18 goals and 92 points in 270 games with Tampa Bay. He appeared in 42 games during the 2008-09 season after having shoulder surgery and was granted his leave eight games into last season.

One player who will be coming to camp on a tryout invitation is former Lightning forward Eric Perrin. Perrin scored 13 goals and 36 points in his first full NHL season with the Lightning in 2005-06. Perrin, 34, spent the past two seasons with the Atlanta Thrashers.
