Any first-year school playing its first varsity game is going to have some rough spots. Fortunately for Fivay, they only lasted about four minutes.
The Falcons (1-0) overcame an early TD to defeat Sunlake's junior varsity 38-7 at Fivay Stadium, shutting down the Seahawks on both sides of the ball.
"It's amazing," said junior linebacker Cole Ruch, who scored the school's first touchdown after blocking a first-quarter punt and returning it 6 yards. "As soon as that play happened, the whole momentum just shifted."
Fivay racked up 410 yards of offense, including 139 passing and a touchdown by sophomore quarterback Tyler Degen. Aaron Gordon, Kevin Faulkner, Jose Mancilla and Justin Erwin had the other Falcon touchdowns. Bryan Poinsette was Fivay's leading rusher with 95 yards on nine carries.
"I'm happy with it," said Falcons coach Chris Taylor. "You've got to learn to win, and I think they were able to feel each other out early, and down 7-0, that's where the leaders show."
The game ended early after an apparent back injury to a Sunlake JV player with 2:14 remaining. The player had feeling in all of his extremities before an ambulance arrived to take him to a nearby hospital.
