Jesuit senior LB Anthony Harrell will be withheld from playing in tonight's season opener against Lakeland Kathleen, the school announced Thursday.
In a statement released by the school, Jesuit administration explains "the decision to withhold is based on a rule involving transfer students for which the Athletic Department awaits clarification from the Florida High School Athletic Association."
When contacted Wednesday by the Tribune, FHSAA spokesperson Seth Polansky said there was no open investigation involving Jesuit's football program.
Harrell, a Division I recruit, transferred to Jesuit from Freedom during the summer. His father, James Harrell, accepted the head coaching position at Jesuit in the spring after one season as Freedom's coach.
Focused on record
Alonso DE Anthony Chickillo will end his recruitment during a ceremony Thursday at the school, where he will announce his college destination from among his six finalists: Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Miami, Tennessee and the University of South Florida.
Getting his decision out of the way will allow Chickillo to focus on his senior season. He has aspirations of breaking the Hillsborough County sack record, and the countdown begins tonight at Brandon. Last year against the Eagles, Chickillo collected four sacks before suffering a broken collarbone.
After missing most of the season recovering, Chickillo returned and finished with 12.5 sacks.
Can White top 2,000?
Sickles senior RB Cary White, Hillsborough County's rushing leader during the 2009 regular season, is averaging 20 yards per carry in his last four quarters. He rushed for 210 yards with three touchdowns in his team's preseason win over Steinbrenner and ran for 230 yards with three touchdowns in the spring jamboree win against Jesuit.
On the first day of fall practice, White said his goal is to top 2,000 yards. First-year coach Brian Turner thinks it's a strong possibility it will happen.
"If he gets 25 carries a game, he'll get 2,000," Turner said. "Cary has gotten faster. He has another gear. I'll look for him to break a lot of long runs this year."
Attitude adjustment
As much as Robinson coach Mike DePue was upset about the lack of physicality his team displayed during last week's preseason win over Bradenton Bayshore, another thing regarding his team's attitude caught his eye as well.
"Right now our kids out there are putting so much pressure on themselves. These kids get all this hype, and they want to live up to these expectations," DePue said. "Probably one of the most difficult things in coaching is to get the psyche of the kids in the right place. It's something we're constantly working on. We want them to go out there and have a little bit more fun."
