Wednesday's practice had a nice little twist to it. In preparation for the deafening crowd noise expected on Saturday in Gainesville, the University of South Florida Bulls practiced as band sounds and crowd noise blared through speakers set up near the south end zone of the practice field.
Simulation of a hostile crowd was usually a luxury at other schools Coach Skip Holtz coached at.
"When we were at Notre Dame, we had the indoor facility. We're playing at Tennessee and "Rocky Top" played nonstop - it gives the players an idea of what's going to happen," Holtz said. "When we were at South Carolina, we used to turn the stereo system on in the stadium and then go get about 15 plays in with the crowd noise going.
"They need to understand you can't just turn and yell to the guy beside you. You have to be really dialed in."
BULL BITS: Offensive coordinator Todd Fitch said the Bulls will continue its running-back-by-committee approach despite the emergence of sophomore Demetris Murray on Saturday. ... Holtz acknowledged several players the "graded a winner" on special teams Saturday: senior Donte Spires, sophomores George Baker, Armando Sanchez, freshman Mark Joyce and sophomore Kayvon Webster.
