Robert Covington had 17 points and eight rebounds to lead Tennessee State to a 72-68 victory over No. 9 Murray State on Thursday night, handing the Racers their first loss of the season.
Isaiah Canaan had 31 points and six rebounds for Murray State (23-1, 11-1 Ohio Valley Conference), which was the last unbeaten team in Division I.
Murray State has won the past eight meetings against Tennessee State (16-10, 9-4) dating to 2008-09.
Covington hit a 3-pointer with four minutes left that gave Tennessee State a 65-62 lead.
The Tigers led 69-68 when a turnover gave Murray State the ball with 11.2 seconds to play.
Tennessee State stole the inbounds pass and Covington was fouled with 9.7 seconds left, but he missed both free throws.
Canaan turned the ball over and committed a foul with 3.5 seconds to play. Kenny Moore made two free throws to make it a three-point lead.
Murray State again turned the ball over on a long inbounds pass, and Jordan Cyphers made one of two free throws to seal the upset.
NO. 21 WISCONSIN 68, MINNESOTA 61: Jordan Taylor scored 27 points for his first college win in his home state, and Wisconsin (19-6, 8-4 Big Ten) gutted out an overtime victory at Minnesota (17-8, 5-7).
The Badgers won despite failing to score during the final 71/2-plus minutes of regulation.
Ryan Evans had 17 points and 11 rebounds for Wisconsin, which went 15-for-17 from the free-throw line in overtime.
Rodney Williams and Andre Hollins guided a frantic comeback by the Gophers in the final minutes of regulation after they fell behind 49-36. The Badgers made only one basket in the last 91/2 minutes of the second half, a putback by Jared Berggren with 7:44 remaining.
NO. 20 MISS. STATE 70, MISSISSIPPI 60: Arnett Moultrie scored 18 points, Dee Bost dished a career-high 13 assists and visiting Mississippi State (19-5, 6-3 Southeastern Conference) easily beat rival Mississippi (14-9, 4-5).
It was another efficient performance for the 6-foot-11 Moultrie, who was 9-for-14 from the field. Moultrie had plenty of easy looks thanks to several nice passes from Bost, who had eight assists in the first half as the Bulldogs built a 40-27 lead.
Mississippi State scored the game's first eight points and never trailed. Renardo Sidney scored 14 points and Rodney Hood added 10 for the Bulldogs.
Reginald Buckner had 15 points and nine rebounds for the Rebels, who have lost three of four. Jarvis Summers scored 12 points and Jelan Kendrick added 11 for Ole Miss.
NO. 23 INDIANA 84, ILLINOIS 71: Cody Zeller scored 22 points and Victor Oladipo had 18 to lead host Indiana (19-6, 7-6 Big Ten) past Illinois (16-8, 5-6).
The Hoosiers have won three of four.
D.J. Richardson had 19 points and Meyers Leonard added 17 for Illinois, which has lost five straight in Bloomington when the Hoosiers are ranked. The Illini also failed to take their first lead in the series since 1975.
For nearly 19 minutes, neither team led by more than four points. Indiana broke through with an 8-0 run early in the second half to make it 54-46.
MIAMI 65, VIRGINIA TECH 49: Reggie Johnson scored 15 points as Miami (15-7, 6-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) defeated Virginia Tech (13-11, 2-7) to follow up Sunday's win over No. 7 Duke.
The Hurricanes took the lead for good with a 10-0 run during a 3:34 span midway through the first half. DeQuan Jones' baseline jumper with 8:38 left capped the run and gave Miami a 20-8 lead.
Shane Larkin scored 14 points and Kenny Kadji finished with 11 for Miami, which won its fifth straight.
NORTH CAROLINA: Junior Dexter Strickland, who started the first 19 games of the season, had surgery to repair a knee injury that will sideline him the rest of the season. Strickland was injured Jan. 19.
