Call it one big praise party.
The 10th anniversary Super Bowl Gospel Celebration comes to the University of South Florida Sun Dome at 7:30 p.m. Friday, with a fast-paced, high-energy show that combines God, gridiron and Grammy-award winning singers.
Organizers just announced a new addition to the lineup: a tribute to former Tampa Bay Buccaneers Coach Tony Dungy, who announced his retirement from professional football earlier this month. He will receive the event's first-ever Lifetime of Inspiration Award.
Joining him on stage will be Chicago Bears' Coach Lovie Smith, whose team lost to the Dungy-led Indianapolis Colts in the 2007 Super Bowl showdown.
"We dance, we sing, we praise and we go on for a long time," says event founder Melanie Few. "We're not going to let Snoop Dogg have all the fun. This is the happening party. God always does something special for us."
Entertainers at the event include gospel greats Mary Mary, Donnie McClurkin, Hezekiah Walker and Marvin Sapp. Making its second consecutive appearance will be the NFL Players All-Star Choir, with more than two dozen players donning robes and belting out songs. Several will also offer their faith testimonies.
Tickets range from $25 to $95, with a portion of the proceeds to benefit the NFL YET (Youth Education Town) Tampa Bay. Local YET participants ages 6 to 18 will open the concert with a performance of their own.
