The University of South Florida men's basketball program signed guard Jawanza Poland to a National Letter of Intent on Tuesday, the school announced.
Poland is the Bulls' fifth recruit in the 2010-11 class.
"Jawanza is a good addition to our wing position," USF coach Stan Heath said in a statement. "He is an outstanding athlete with tremendous quickness and defensive skills. He will bring three years of eligibility to the Bulls, and we expect him to help us immediately."
The Bulls' loss of All-Big East guard Dominique Jones to the NBA as a junior creates an opportunity for Poland to earn playing time next season.
Poland, 6-foot-4, 195 pounds, played the 2008-09 season at Cowley College in Kansas, where he averaged 13.5 points and 3.6 rebounds while hitting 76 percent from the free-throw line and 38 percent from three-point range. He was named the Kansas Jayhawk East All-Conference Freshman of the Year.
Last season, Poland took a redshirt season at Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College, leaving him three years of NCAA eligibility.
Poland joins USF signees Shedrick Hayes, Hugh Robertson, LaVonte Dority and Waverly Austin in the 2010-11 class.
