Bulls notes: Callahan to see only 1 ex-player

Armwood High coach Sean Callahan will spend Friday night trying to earn a season-opening victory against Newsome. Saturday night, he'll be at Raymond James Stadium to watch the USF-Stony Brook game.

At the start of the week, Callahan expected to see four of his former players in the game. Thursday, that number dwindled to one: Stony Brook sophomore K/P Wesley Skiffington.

USF redshirt freshman DE Ryne Giddins, one of the best players in Armwood history, was ruled out Thursday due to a foot injury. Giddins' former teammate at Armwood, Stony Brook LB Casey Callahan - Sean's son - is out following surgery Thursday to repair a torn tendon on a ring finger.

Stony Brook junior WR Mat Brevi, another Armwood product, suffered a knee injury at Wednesday's practice and will not travel with the team.

Casey Callahan is scheduled to travel to Tampa, but instead of watching his son play, Sean Callahan can only offer encouragement. Casey, a linebacker and special-teams player, is expected to miss up to eight weeks.

"As a dad, I'm pretty disappointed,'' Sean said. "As a coach, you just tell him to get back up and start working to get back onto the field.''

SAFE TRAVELS: Hurricane Earl is expected to arrive ashore sometime Friday afternoon on Long Island, where Stony Brook's campus is located.

However, Stony Brook sports information director Adam Gutes said the Seawolves are scheduled to fly to Tampa at noon today, well before the conditions are expected to worsen due to Earl.

BULL BITS: USF's official injury report lists only Giddins, OL Mark Popek (knee), WR A.J. Love (knee) and WR Sterling Griffin (leg/ankle) as out. ... USF officials are projecting a crowd of around 35,000 Saturday. ... USF announced Thursday it has signed a two-year contract extension with Bright House Sports Networks to produce and air live coverage of USF nonconference football and men's basketball games.
