About this data
Twenty-seven people started the Christmas Bird Count in 1900, when bird watchers and scientists became concerned about declining bird populations. Today, the annual tradition attracts tens of thousands of volunteers across the country, according to the National Audubon Society. This year, the count ran from Dec. 14 to Jan. 5. Teams canvass “count circles,” which span a 15-mile diameter, and record all the birds they can in a day, compile the data and submit it to Audubon. Florida has 66 circles.
