Glossary of terms used in this data

For the calibration test normal flow rate indicates wide open, how people normally pump their gas. Special indicates a slower flow rate to detect slippage.

In the error field, a negative number indicates that the calibration is off in the vendor’s favor. A positive number is off in the consumer’s favor. These numbers indicate in cubic inches how far from zero a measurement was, based on a five gallon draft. If nothing is indicated in the field it means that during a test something occurred that put the result in question, so nothing was recorded and a subsequent test was performed.

The tolerance level is measured by two standards: maintenance indicates that the device has been in service more than 30 days and the tolerance level is 6 cubic inches either high or low on a five gallon test. There are 231 cubic inches in one gallon. Acceptance indicates device has been in service for less than 30 days, either new or reinstated. The tolerance level is only 3 cubic inches either high or low on a five gallon test.

Fail doesn’t mean a device has been taken out of service. If the error is in the consumer’s favor it won’t be. The vendor will be given a notice.
