The gateway to Tampa Bay is where more people go to end their lives than anywhere in Florida. But if they aim to wrap themselves in the majesty of the landmark, they may face painful disappointment: Only the lucky ones die quickly.

Here’s a list of suicide attempts from this most public of places, traveled by some 51,000 vehicles a day. To learn more, read our news story. You can also add your comment. Please tell us if you know of an incident not listed here.

About This Database

Information is compiled by The Tampa Tribune from law enforcement reports and media accounts. It covers three different bridges: The original two-lane bridge, opened Sept. 6 1954; a parallel bridge built to increase travel lanes, opened May 19, 1971; and the existing four-lane high-rise, opened April 30, 1987, to replace the older bridge.
