Everglades: A Delicate Ecosystem Hangs In The Balance
SEVEN YEARS AGO
Congress approved the Everglades restoration plan. Funding delays have affected both construction costs and deadlines, prompting concern from experts about the overall project’s completion.
THEN THIS MONTH
The federal water bill was passed. It contains about $2 billion for restoration efforts at two critical projects: the Indian River Lagoon in St. Lucie and Martin counties, and Picayune Strand State Forest in southwest Collier County.
BUT WILL IT WORK?
Efforts to improve water quality and water flow to the Everglades hinge on a series of complex projects, many of which have never been tried before. One early success: treating polluted runoff water in Palm Beach and Henry counties before it flows south.
