Fighting Closure

Officials and alumni are calling on the community to remember what Middleton was and focus on what it could be.

The High School At A Glance

History: The school opened in 1934 as one of two all-black schools in Tampa. It was named for George S. Middleton, a community leader, who moved to Tampa in the late 1800s.

Location: The original school, at 24th and Chelsea streets, was damaged by fires in 1940 and 1968. The new building, opened in August 2002 at Osborne Avenue and 22nd Street, cost $46 million.

Student body: About 1,500 in grades 9 through 12

Curriculum: Traditional curriculum plus magnet programs in math, science, engineering and technology

Notable alumni:

  • Les Miller, former state senator and USF student ombudsman
  • Gwen Miller, Tampa City Council, District 1
  • Perry Harvey Jr., Tampa's first black city councilman
  • The Rev. Arthur Jones, Bible-Based Fellowship Church
  • State Sen. Arthenia Joyner, D-Tampa
  • The Rev. Abe Brown, Abe Brown Ministries
