From Balm to Keystone and Plant City to Wimauma, a core of rural residents have banded together to fight for their country lifestyle, to keep the suburbanites and the traffic jams from encroaching on their lives. They've formed U-CAN, or United Citizens' Action Network and plan to hold county government accountable.

Despite repeated assurances that a Brandon bypass or Tampa beltway running through rural Lithia had been axed from the South County Transportation Plan, the proposed road remained the hot topic of discussion at a Hillsborough County public meeting at Pinecrest Elementary School on Monday, November 5th.

More than 200 residents packed the cafeteria on Nov, where staff from the county's Planning and Growth Management Department heard public comment from members of the rural community.
The area in pink on the first map is the rural service area in Hillsborough County, which comprises more than half of the land mass of the county. Rural residents are fighting to keep suburbia at bay.
