The main topic today is the "bailout" of the "Big 3" auto manufacturers. This is a very serious security situation. Our enemies are patiently watching for a weakness so they can strike us; without the auto companies, who will make our weaponry like they did in World War II? Our elected leaders, both city and county, are laying the foundations for the future by creating ways to raise taxes on us and are doing it with all the vengeance and hatefulness they can muster without regard for voters and taxpayers. Sebring claims they will lower the millage to accommodate the 1-pecent fire assessment fee with a 10-percent cap. If one figures this out, a tax bill of $3,000 will become $3,300, then $3,630, etc. There goes the tax savings we voted on. ...more

Congratulations to Commissioner Don Bates and one other commissioner for opposing the county asphalt plant. According to the Jan. 26 edition of Highlands Today, if Amendment One passes, Highlands County won't have the money to build roads, including completion of Sebring Parkway. Anyone who has the audacity to approve purchase of an asphalt plant, which will be another albatross like the Sebring Power Plant was, must reside in La La Land. It seems redundant to mention that interest on the $3.3 million loan would likely run $165,000 per year. This plant would be a disgrace in the annals of decision making by county governments. The main benefit from this is our choices for commissioner have been decided for next election. ...more

The Hillsborough County Commission will soon consider allocating $500 million for road improvements proposed by the Transportation Task Force. If approved, the funds will come from the Community Investment Tax, which in its 10th year of collection has been responsible for many great things in our community and has kept property taxes down. ...more
