SEBRING — Wednesday's emergency preparedness drill at the Agri-Civic Center was only practice, but almost 200 volunteers and county employees acted like the mock exercise was real. Andrew Pease, a Sun 'n' Lake Elementary School student, gave up a day of summer break to volunteer and portray a "victim," along with his mother Mary and sister Becky. The 9-year-old took the drill to heart and said he was "a little scared." "My mom tells me to not talk to strangers, but I trust the police and others," said Andrew Pease. SEBRING — The purchase of the old Tampa Electric Co. power plant property is apparently off. "At this point," said Assistant City Manager Scott Noethlich, "nothing is happening." The city was interested in buying the Dinner Lake lot where the stream-driven plant sat until TRC America Inc. tore it down. More than a decade ago, said Andy Albritton, a mechanic there, the steam plant supplied power to the city. TRC America, which buys and demolishes power plants to sell the parts, finished removing the Dinner Lake plant in April. "It fits between the solid waste office and the city's fuel depot," Noethlich said. If the city ever wanted to expand either facility, the lot could have been useful. ...more

SEBRING — Blaine Albritton kept walking his steer around in circles near Firemen's Field's midway Thursday. Blaine's steer, Billy Bob, seemed a bit anxious that morning, mooing and occasionally bucking as Blaine held to his lead rope. But as Blaine got ready Thursday morning to show and auction Billy Bob at the Highlands County Fair, Blaine, 10, was also a bit uneasy parting with him. "It's going to be hard," he said of the coming auction. Blaine considered Billy Bob to be "like my best friend" during the 8 months he raised him. ...more
