It was up, up and away, this morning. At least I, and a bunch of others, including Elizabeth Stewart, hope it was an up, up and away morning. Elizabeth, you see, is celebrating her 90th birthday on June 4. Since there isn't a whole lot of things you can get for a member of the eldest set, her daughter Barbara is surprising her with a hot air balloon ride today - weather permitting. It's a first for both of them. Not only that it is also a kind of a gift package. Barbara – yes that's county commissioner Barbara Stewart – is celebrating her May 12 wedding anniversary by taking husband Fred along on the same ride. ...more

I love a great deli. Notice I used the word "great." You see, I don't like all delis. My tolerance is very low for a "just good" deli. As far as an "average" deli goes, I could take it or leave it (usually leave it). When you walk into a truly great deli, you're really giving yourself a treat. ...more

SEBRING — Jason Gray was bragging on his fellow barbecuers Saturday afternoon. There was a fire in his Dominizer, a water chamber cooker. The grease pan ignited, and two flashovers flamed across the 6.5 foot high ceiling. It was moving too quickly to wait for the fire department. The entire trailer would have been involved, and the neighboring trailers would have been endangered too. Gray, a burly caterer from Wauchula who supplies weddings and small gatherings, shouted for help twice, and within seconds two fire extinguishers appeared on the serving counter of his 24-foot trailer. TAMPA - Wearing loose-fitting orange detention outfits and shackled, three middle school students accused of setting off an acid bomb were remanded to house arrest today by a judge. The three boys, a 12-year-old and two 11-year-olds, were ordered not to watch television, play video games or contact one another.
