On Dec. 30, the court will rule on a lawsuit filed by a homeowner, Aaron Seward, represented by the law firm of Keough and DeBose of Orlando, vs. The Knoll-Century Hill Homeowner Association, Inc. Homeowners hope and pray that the long ongoing spinning wheel of unfair practices and abuses will spin to a stop. 1. Rules and regulations are selectively enforced against homeowners. 2. Timely notice is not given on crucial votes or no notice is given at all. 3. The board has refused to let homeowners view and copy records pursuant to the Florida law. 4. Members have requested copies of tape recording for each meeting, which would substantiate many of the complaints members have filed. The board's response is, "We threw them all away." 5. We have heard members who are supporters of the board and the status-quo yell out when members raise questions, "Burn them out." This went unabated by the board, further more they appeared to welcome it. At times board members joined in the harassment of homeowners. ...more

I am not given to writing letters to the editor but have felt compelled with a sense of urgency to respond to the accusations put forward recently by one of our Spring Lakes residents. Having served a little over nine years on the SLID board, my background is quite deep and I can without hesitation say that the current commissioners are not and do not intend to do anything that would be out of line financially or authoritatively on their watch. This is for the most part a thankless job and not a member of the board over the years as far as I know has ever undertook the job of soliciting votes to serve the Spring Lake Community for financial gain. If anything, there are times when I know a board member has requested themselves from voting on an issue that might have questionable ramifications. ...more

Just when we thought we were safe from any possible controversy over decisions or proposed actions by the Spring Lake Improvement District (SLID) Board of Supervisors and their district manager, they come up with yet another grim threat to our existence (or wallets). Their latest action is an extremely serious attempt at significantly expanding their powers through a complete re-write and re-codification of the existing SLID charter. This must be approved in a bill passed in both Houses of the Florida Legislature and signed by the governor. The bad news is that SLID intends to formally present this draft new charter to the legislative delegation (Rep. Denise Grimsley, et. al.) for their review and further action on Dec. 3 at the Highlands County Government Center. ...more
