This week, Tarpon Springs City Commissioner Susan Slattery proposed that the city adopt an ordinance that would place stringent city controls over developing property on which eagle's nests are located. Other commissioners gave the idea a preliminary endorsement. Hey, wait a minute. There's an eagle's nest on the Wal-Mart property. Almost a century ago, master shoemaker Vasile George Faklis arrived in Tarpon Springs from the Greek island of Symi and began plying his trade. In addition to making shoes, Faklis could also diagnose and correct his customers' foot problems. Today, his grandson, also named Vasile George, tends to people's feet at Faklis Orthopedic Service, on Tarpon Avenue. A board-certified and state-licensed orthotist, his knowledge of the human foot is up a notch from that of his grandfather, who learned his craft through an apprenticeship in Greece. ...more

My name is Randy Gilde. I live in Lake Placid and I am one of the owners of Highlands Greenhouse-Delray Plants. We are the proposed site for the ethanol plant in Venus. This opinion is written with all due respect to Hilary Swain and Archbold in response to her guest column in Saturday's paper. We have nothing but admiration for what they do and represent. We are a green industry and are also good stewards of the land the Lord has blessed us with.
