BRADENTON — The Sebring baseball team has had its share of frustrating losses this season, but, faced with adversity, the Blue Streaks have shown a knack for bouncing back. After stranding 14 runners on base and striking out 12 times in a 5-1 loss to Braden River in the Class 4A-District 10 championship game on Friday, Sebring will need to do just that if they hope to keep their season afloat. ...more

WAUCHULA — Dillan Runner threw six strong innings and the Avon Park baseball team's bats came alive on Friday night as the Red Devils opened up district play with a 13-7 victory over Hardee. Runner hardly broke a sweat to pick up the team's first Class 4A-District 10 win of the season: He threw just 69 pitches in six innings of work and allowed just three runs, mixing locations and pitches to keep the Wildcats off-balance all night. "Dillan pitched one heck of a game," said Avon Park coach Mort Jackson. "It was one of the best-pitched games I've seen him throw — he was throwing every pitch for a strike and mixing up his curveball, fastball, change-up and splitter very effectively." The Red Devils (3-2, 1-0), meanwhile, hammered 13 hits, and were led by Kyle Jackson, who went 3 for 5 with a double and four RBI, Logan Hunter, who finished with two hits and two RBI, and Corey Topa, who added two hits. ...more

AVON PARK –– "We want to win bad. I mean really bad," sounded Avon Park senior Ashton Shirey, who is still feeling the sting of how the '06 girls softball season ended — on a controversial play at the plate at the hands of Braden River — and then watching arch-rival Sebring win the Class 4A-District 10 title on their home field. A close play at the plate, where it looked like Lamb had tagged the runner, was called a score and ended Avon Park's hopes of meeting the Blue Streaks in the title game. A bitter pill was being swallowed as the long faces of the Red Devils gazed at the celebrating Blue Streaks, knowing full well that it could have and should have been them. "Nobody wants to watch their rival win on their home field," Shirey said. "This team is back with a strong resolve this season, knowing that this is our chance. This is our time." ...more

The second round of the boys Class 4A-District 10 tournament is tonight in Palmetto, and Avon Park and Sebring are both in action. Avon Park, which is the No. 5 seed, faces fourth-seed Hardee at 6 tonight. The Red Devils, who lost to Okeechobee 57-55 on Saturday, have had an up and down season and a win tonight against a talented Wildcat squad would send them into Friday night's semifinals. ...more

SEBRING — When Daniel Grimaldo walked onto Firemen's Field for the second half of Tuesday's Class 4A-District 10 semifinal match, the Sebring senior realized the jog from the locker room could very well be his last. "I knew what I had to do," Grimaldo said. "Everyone was telling me: 'Go to the goal.' "That's my job." Grimaldo scored two goals in the first seven minutes of the second half, breaking a first-half tie and leading the Sebring boys soccer team to a 5-3 victory over third-seeded Braden River. The No. 2-seeded Blue Streaks (13-7-3) now face top-seeded Palmetto at 7 p.m. on Friday for the district title and home-field advantage for regionals. ...more

Devils Slip Past Pirates BRADEN RIVER — Cleveland Nobles scored a team-high 16 points and Virgil Cooper chipped in nine as the Avon Park boys basketball team edged Braden River 39-38 in the Class 4A-District 10 match-up on Tuesday. The Red Devils nearly repeated the scenario of an early season overtime loss to the Pirates. Leading by a basket, an Avon Park foul put Braden River on the line with no time left for a chance to send the game into OT, but the Pirate shooter hit only one free throw and the visiting Devils squeaked by with the win. ...more
