AVON PARK — A 49-year-old Avon Park man was recovering from a self-inflicted and accidental gunshot wound Monday, after his .25-caliber semi-automatic handgun went off while he was cleaning it Friday night. Avon Park Police Cmdr. Michael J. Rowan said that police investigators were called to the Florida Hospital of Sebring emergency room shortly after 8:30 p.m. Friday, in response to a report of a man with a gunshot wound. "He apparently was cleaning his firearm and thought he had emptied it when the firearm discharged," Rowan said. "The bullet struck the inside left forearm and the exit wound was above the wrist. No one disputes who shot and killed Joseph Martell. Investigators say Max Wesley Horn Jr. shot Martell six times with a .45-caliber semi-automatic handgun on March 29 during the annual Chasco Fiesta. Horn's attorney, Keith Hammond, admits his client shot Martell and then told investigators which hand he used so a gunshot residue test could be done. ...more

LAKE PLACID –– For the first time in many a moon, Lake Placid head coach Dan Coomes has a smile on his face when talking about his baseball squad. "I'm really excited to see how this team is going to perform," said the LP head coach. "We've got a good mixture of youth and experience and for the first time we have depth at every position. We haven't had this kind of depth in a long while." You would think that by the Green Dragons showing in last week's Bill Jarrett Early Bird Tournament — losing 9-2 to Lake Region and 16-0 to cross-county rival Sebring — that they've regressed somehow, but Coomes has a definite method to his madness. "You only get better by playing the high-caliber teams," Coomes said. "We have to learn to close out games and not let our mistakes cost us the game.
