When I wrote the letter to the editor about milking FEMA it was directed at the people that have been living off the taxpayers since the hurricanes and still are. I do understand that there are many people that have gotten away from FEMA by getting their own homes rebuilt, or finding other homes to raise there families. That's the way it should be and I certainly support the people that have. Yes, FEMA is as well organized as the rest of the government, which is somewhere between ridiculous and totally out of control. It makes it very easy to milk the system, and by doing so take advantage of all the taxpayers of this country. ...more

In response to the article Milking FEMA, I find it quite interesting how one person can begrudge someone without knowing all the circumstances involved. Yes, I am "that lady." I do not need to justify to you as to why I received assistance after damage caused from a hurricane. I will say that I am a taxpayer, have a job and have a home. Oh, I have been in the work force for greater than 30 years. So, let me laugh at your remark as to "get a job and a home!" ...more

Caregivers of quadriplegics or paraplegics know the frailties of store-bought diapers, sometimes failing from one room to another. After eight years of care-giving under these circumstances it gets stressful. Maybe I am ignorant of something better on the market. If so please tell me. If not, please someone in the sciences invent an astronaut diaper for civilians. ...more

I read with amusement the Highlands today article on electronic messages dated Feb. 1 about Mr. David Flowers getting only a letter of reprimand from assistant county administrator Mr. Helms for sending instant messages. I don't know about anyone else but that article really smells when you read between the lines. After the firing of three employees for doing the same thing, save the baloney. Using county equipment for personal use, no matter what the circumstances are, is still against policy. Mr. Helms messed up with the termination of first three persons. Policy again dictates the proper type of disciplinary action that should have been issued. It appears what's good for the goose isn't good for the gander. I guess it just goes to show you, if you're one of the big dogs or good old boys, which ever you prefer, who gets caught with his hand in the cookie jar, it's still business as usual. I wait with great anticipation the next chapter of Highlands Gate! ...more
