SEBRING — Highlands County's most decorated war hero received another post-mortem honor this week. On the Island of Negros in the Philippines, a large memorial marker was set on the crash site where the late Maj. Thomas B. McGuire Jr. died in battle. McGuire, a Highlands County native who won the Congressional Medal of Honor as a pilot in the Army Air Corps in World War II, died at that spot 63 years ago while on a mission that turned into a desperate dog fight. ...more

Arts/Crafts Nature Coast Decorative Artists will meet at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at the Weeki Wachee Senior Citizens Club, 3357 Susan Drive, Spring Hill. The feature of the month will be a "White Elephant Sale" between members along with a soup luncheon cook-off. Monthly projects are designed for all skill levels with an array of mediums and surfaces. A brief meeting, skill building demo and monthly project are featured. The artists are affiliated with The Society of Decorative Painters. At its monthly meetings, the artists collaborate on philanthropic projects as well as projects to improve their painting skills.
