A Bay Crest Elementary teacher is holding a weekend-long scrapbook session to raise money for multiple sclerosis. Jackie Durning, who teaches third grade, coordinated the second "MS Crop for Hope," which starts Friday at the Residence Inn, 4012 Tampa Road, and ends Sunday. Although the scrapbooking activities are booked, Durning will have several auctions and raffles open to the public. Items include restaurant dinners, museum admissions, sports memorabilia and goodie baskets. Proceeds will benefit the mid-Florida chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Last year Durning raised $5,000 from the crop and a multiple sclerosis fundraising walk. She hopes to raise $10,000 this year. ...more

TOWN 'N COUNTRY -- The Volunteer Citizen Patrol Program has had much success in Apollo Beach and Westchase, and now the Hillsborough County Sheriff's office wants to bring the program to the Bay Crest and Twelve Oaks neighborhoods. Tuesday evening a handful of interested locals attended a meeting led by Cpl. Albert Selke and Deputy Faith Nadel, the volunteer program coordinator for the sheriff's office. The duo explained the ins and outs of the program and answered questions. Bay Crest and Twelve Oaks were chosen for the program's expansion because the neighborhoods already have a patrolling system. With the citizen patrol, residents will now have a direct link to the sheriff's office, Nadel said. Duties include: patrolling neighborhoods, assisting with school crossings, documenting graffiti and assisting with road obstructions. ...more
