Perhaps there are many others who did just as we should have this past weekend and early days of the week in getting ready for what could have been a hurricane. I took down and put away anything that could have become a projectile and basically cleaned up my back yard, which was in great need of being cleaned up. But just as we are a bit angry at the work we put into getting ready for what turned out to be not much more than some rather heavy rain showers, we are just as thankful for all the rain Tropical Storm Fay dumped onto our lawns and lakes. ...more

LAKE PLACID — Contractor Ray Hornick is celebrating the 20th anniversary of his company, Hornick Homes Inc., this year. Hornick acknowledged after that amount of time most of the homes he has been building are looking the same to him. Ruth and I took a ride out into the country earlier this week to the visit Edd and Rita Vowels, who just about a year ago sold off all but one of their McDonald's restaurants. Last Feb. 15, I wrote the final chapter on the couple's highly successful business ventures in the tri-county area as well as their influence on so many of the area's community affairs. Then on the 21st of that month they signed the papers that closed out that phase of their life. They then officially joined the ranks of the relaxed retired ones. SEBRING — The drawdown request on Lake Istokpoga was approved earlier this month by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, allowing for the lake to potentially sink down to an elevation of 36 feet if its water is needed for irrigation to the south. Neither Highlands County Lakes Manager Clell Ford nor Trails End Fishing Resort owner Gary Albin has noticed any withdrawals from the lake since the approval. Ford said, however, that the water permit holders to the lake have been allowed to use their permits again on two different days of the week. ...more
