SEBRING — The head of Florida's Democratic Party has assured Highlands County's rank and file that its delegates will be seated at the national convention, Aug. 25-28, in Denver. Karen L. Thurman, who chairs the state party, is "confident that when it is all said and done, our delegation will ... travel to Denver for the National Convention," said Pam Holt, a spokeswoman for the Highlands County party. That's true, said Mark Bubriski, communications director, and it's coming from other party leaders as well. By August, he reasoned, the primaries will be long gone, and so will be the issue of which state held its election first. I am tired of meaningless, bickering "debates" and being asked for contributions while no candidate seems to care about the convention delegate votes which represent one of the largest, most diverse group of voters. I am tired of a few people in Iowa and New Hampshire telling me I can have the leftovers on my ballot. Being involved in politics off and on since 1960 as a young voter in Texas, I am beginning to long for the smoke-filled rooms. At least back then we could pick delegates at our precinct level, then go to a county, state and national convention without waiting for Iowa and New Hampshire telling us who we could vote for. ...more
