A Hillsborough County judge played Santa and a sheriff's deputy was the elf Saturday as more than 300 children received the benefits of the Sheriff's Office District III Toy Drive. Judge Nick Nazaretian, aka Santa, gave dolls, trucks and other toys to children at the district office at 7202 Gunn Highway. The recipients were children who have medical issues, economic challenges, or whose families have been victims of crimes. Deputy Michelle Branscomb, who has organized the toy drive for the past 13 years, also helped distribute the holiday gifts. ...more

Dear Lyn: My mother is 82 and was officially diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2002. She lives with my husband and me. She currently believes she has two little children other than her five grown children. She has these spells in which she starts worrying about them and is afraid they are outside alone and can't get into the house. Sometimes she thinks they are ages 9 and 10. Do you wince whenever you drive by one of those makeshift memorials on the side of the road where obviously some poor soul came to an abrupt end? How sad it is that relatives have such grief that they are drawn to these points of death wishing only to turn back the clock. ...more

When I was a child, Christmas at our house revolved around the tree. It wasn't Christmas until the tree went up, and the holidays were not over till the tree came down. In that respect, not much has changed; the tree is still the focal point of our holiday trimmings. But these days it fights for attention with one other decoration that is slowly taking over the spotlight, and my living room – my Dickens Village. What started in 1995 with just one little ceramic house, The Old Curiosity Shop, has grown into an entire Victorian town. The display now has 12 buildings, including some with moving parts. All of them are lighted and one even plays music. The village also has 10 trees, a road, a bridge, and a town square complete with mailbox, stone fences and a dozen different sets of tiny Victorian people doing everything from selling newspapers to lighting the street lamps and peeking in windows. My village grows every year, because friends and family are continually buying new pieces for it. They know that village "stuff" is a gift I'll always love. ...more
