AVON PARK –– Panther Field is a lot like Wrigley Field when the wind is blowing out –– you can expect a high-scoring game. The South Florida Community College baseball team took advantage of the windy conditions to pound out 21 base hits on its way to a 20-8 win over the Tampa University "B" team in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday. The second game was rained out. "We play in a small yard and when the conditions were like they were, the ball has a chance to travel a long ways," said Panther coach Rick Hitt. "We were fortunate to get some balls up in the air and they got out of the park." ...more

AVON PARK — Chaz Abeln showed Panther fans just what kind of stuff he had in his arsenal on Friday. The Sebring graduate hurled seven innings and struck out nine to lead the South Florida Community College baseball team to an 8-1 victory in the second game of a doubleheader against Community College of Baltimore-Dundalk. "This is the best Chaz has pitched all season," said SFCC head coach Rick Hitt. "He looked sharp for most of the game and had good command. I think he can look at this game as a positive step." WINTER HAVEN — A string of free passes came back to bite the Panthers yet again. The Polk Community College baseball team scored four runs off seven walks to defeat South Florida Community College 8-1 at Viking Field on Wednesday. "We were very undisciplined at the plate," said SFCC head coach Rick Hitt. "We never got it going on offense, and [Polk's] pitching staff did a great job against us." Austin Gaines scored the Panthers' only run in the first inning off a fielder's choice by Steven Levine and managed just six hits against the Vikings. ...more
