The Keystone Civic Association's Adopt-A-Road crew hit the street April 18 for the Great American Cleanup, Keep Hillsborough County Beautiful, and to celebrate Earth Day. About 19 volunteers scoured the group's adopted section of Gunn Highway - from Van Dyke Road to Tarpon Springs Road; Gunn Highway south to Miles Road; and Tarpon Springs Road from Gunn Highway to Blake Road; and a half-mile of Wayne Road west from Gunn Highway - a total of three miles. ...more

Mayor Pam Iorio marked Earth Day by unveiling a new recycling program that will place receptacles for recycling plastic and aluminum downtown and in the Channel District. Iorio said the 20 new bins will give pedestrians a place to throw plastic bottles, tins cans and other recyclables instead of tossing them into a garbage can. The city has teamed up with the Tampa Downtown Partnership on a program that will cost about $15,000 a year. More receptacles are planned in the future. ...more

Conserve energy and save money this Earth Day by switching off electronics and using less energy. But truly turning off the power isn't as easy as flipping a switch. Many household electronics, known as "vampire appliances," use standby power when turned off, and the average home has about 20 such devices. A Cornell University study found the average household will spend $200 a year for standby power. Conservationists recommend unplugging electronics or using a power strip where the power can be cut off at the source. But critics say the cost is minimal for most items and that constant unplugging can shorten the life span of some products. ...more
