On April 4, 25 students from St. John's Episcopal Parish Day School traveled to Orlando to participate in the Florida State Latin Forum, sponsored by the Florida Junior Classical League. The students competed in academic, creative and athletic competitions and were ranked by their performance against other middle or junior division schools throughout the state. St. John's students excelled in academic tests such as grammar, vocabulary and mythology; they took the top awards in several creative contests, including pottery and mosaics; and they won athletic awards during the Romapalooza portion of the three-day event. ...more

During a recent weeklong trip to Washington, St. John's Episcopal Parish Day School eighth-graders and their teachers visited monuments and participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery. They also watched a presidential motorcade pass by. ...more

On Jan. 31, 57 students from St. John's Episcopal Parish Day School along with their teacher, D.J. Holt, participated in the Regional Latin Forum at Robinson High School. They dominated the Junior Division and won awards in academic tests such as customs, history of the republic, history of the empire, derivatives, mythology and vocabulary. They also were successful in the creative contests, including mosaics, drawings, games, maps, paintings, sculpture, models and textile arts. Overall, they took first place in the academic, creative and "Olympika" categories, and first place for the Junior Division Sweepstakes. Almost 40 seventh- and eighth-graders from St. John's Episcopal Parish Day School attended a recent Latin Mini-Forum in Bradenton. The event prepares students for the Florida Junior Classical League Fora in the spring, an academic testing and Certamen event. Certamen is a game in which teams of students answer questions on topics such as Roman history and culture and Latin grammar and vocabulary. At the mini-forum, St. John's students won top awards in tests such as mythology, customs, grammar and history of the monarchy and republic. ...more
