Walter closing fiber plant Tampa-based Walter Energy will close a plant in Birmingham, Ala., that produced approximately 100,000 tons of slag wool fiber products annually, primarily used in acoustical ceiling tiles, fireproof cement, and other building products. The closure will eliminate approximately 87 jobs, although the company said "more than half of the employees are expected to be retained in other areas of Walter Coke's operation." ...more
