APPETITE FOR SEDUCTION Tripped across this list of chef pickup lines at Eggbeater, a food blog by Shuna Fish Lydon at eggbeater.typepad.com that I enjoy and read regularly. I liked the list because there are lots of in-jokes that only chefs can appreciate, such as the references to burned forearms, the lack of free time away from work and, of course, specific cooking techniques and seasonings. Here's what's new in food media: In print: We really should all stop reading so many cooking magazines, but the July issues are hot. The sultry burger on the cover of the new Bon Appetit's BBQ Issue made us open it up. Inside it was ab-fab. Cooking Light also pulled us in with a cherry pie cover, then kept our attention with a technique guide to marinating (because they help keep your kitchen cool; pop it on the grill). Gourmet's cover screamed "Open me!" with the promise of "delicious new ways to use tomatoes," and we obeyed. It paid off, too, in tomato bread pudding and a gorgeous tomato terrine with corn and shiitake mushrooms, tomato granita, green tomato salad with honeydew, cilantro and jalepeno. ...more

DEPTH IN DINING Tampa Bay gets slagged for being dominated by restaurant chains. There's certainly truth behind that image, but from what I see and hear, it's a gross exaggeration. For every Outback, there are dozens of great neighborhood places such as Bungalow Bistro in Seminole Heights or Romano's Greek and Italian eatery on State Road 60 in Brandon. ...more
