Cable wars I don't feel sorry for Brighthouse Networks or Time Warner Cable. I used to have DirecTV and remember being charged an extra $5 per month to have the local channels included in my setup. If other cable companies have been charging their customers for a service they have been getting for free, then it's about time they pay for it as well. ...more

Pharmaceutical companies and every other special interest group-industry do indeed have a strong grip on our elected representatives (editorial of Dec. 10.) The people's business doesn't get done because of the need for elected officials to constantly raise money to afford to run for re-election. Money comes from drug, oil, dairy, financial, meat and virtually every industry in the country as well as some outside the country to buy the votes of the peoples' representatives. In our system, voting out the incumbents simply replaces them with other special interest agents. ...more

The First Amendment declares that Congress shall "make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech." In 1918, the Sedition Act was passed, prohibiting U.S. citizens from "convey(ing) false reports or false statements" that tainted the image of the government and military during times of war.
