This is in response to the small boats and saber rattling letter. No rational person believes that Iran would give up support for Hamas, Islamic Jihad, disarm Hezbollah, agree to a two-state solution for Israel and the Palestinians plus open their nuclear program to international inspection solely by virtue of diplomacy. To think otherwise is being deceived. ...more

The animosity over homosex-ual marriage is basically over secular concept and religious belief. Here in the United States, Christians are in the vast majority and make up nearly 80 percent of the population. Accordingly, their lives, albeit in various degree, are led by the teachings of the church and Holy Bible. The Bible is considered the word of God and Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13 makes it crystal clear that homosexuality is an abomination. With regards to marriage the book of Mark 10:6-9 relates what Jesus told his disciples. "From the beginning of creation God made them male and female. For this cause shall man leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife. And they shall be one flesh, so then they are no more twain but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together let not man put asunder." Marriage to Christians is a sacrament given from God. ...more

The Patriot Act was not intended to circumvent basic civil rights. The purpose of the Patriot Act is to better assist U.S. law enforcement in fighting terrorism here in the United States and abroad. Remember Sept.11? The initial act was voted for by the Senate 98 to 1, one of the few decisions agreed upon by both Republicans and Democrats. The act breaks down the barrier between the CIA and FBI so they can share information about terrorists. Perhaps had that been done earlier, we would have avoided the Sept.11 attack and saved 3,000 innocent American lives. Many of the objections regarding the Patriot Act are actually allowed under previous and existing law, i.e., tools already used against drug dealers and other criminals. The act basically expanded them to cover terrorism and accordingly, made our nation safer. ...more

This concerns Bud Morgan's demand for an apology. The intent of my column was to shed a different light on claims made in his "Legacy of Failure" guest column. At no time did I direct opinion against the writer. It's unfortunate if Mr. Morgan inferred otherwise and for that I truly apologize. Our First Amendment rights allow for us to express opinions freely, both his and mine. Ever since Vietnam and Sen. John Kerry calling our soldiers murderers and rapists, the national mood has changed. After the attack on 9/11 and America at war again, this time against Islamic terror, the division of the electorate seems to have become even greater. ...more

Occasionally I write guest columns for Highlands Today. I enjoy writing and research my subject(s) thoroughly. Nonetheless, opinion articles are located on the opinion page for a reason. I honor a person's right to present their views in the public forum, and I thoroughly enjoy it when others comment about my writing whether their comments are positive or negative. I often learn from such comments. For example, Randy Ludacer criticized a couple of items in my column. Mr. Ludacer's words of criticism were respectful and backed up with opinions of merit. I learned from Mr. Ludacer's insightful comments. I will not, however, permit anyone to slander my character without an appropriate response. ...more
