While many couples across the country went out of their way to schedule their weddings for Aug. 8 as a way of securing good luck, a South Shore couple took the theme in a slightly different direction. Carmine and Joanna Caporaso planned for their second son, Ryan, to be born on Aug. 8 at Brandon Regional Hospital. However, the Caporasos ended up taking the 8-8-08 gimmick to the extreme — the infant was born precisely at 8:08 a.m. "We had selected that date a while ago and my surgery was scheduled for 7:30 a.m.," Joanna said. My thanks to Martha and Claudia Olivares for inviting me to the Montessori Children's Year End Step Up and Graduation Ceremony. There were 21 children who will be going on to another school. Every time I am lucky enough to attend one of these affairs I am amazed! They dance, sing and do sign language. I don't remember anyone in my past school years being this bright. The dedicated teachers, volunteers, and Mr. Filip, the music teacher who directed and produced this awesome program with great patience and care for so many children. ...more

Highlands County Habitat for Humanity's loss is certainly a big gain for the DeSoto-Arcadia Habitat for Humanity. Jane Breylinger, a true believer in the monumental mission of eliminating substandard housing, is leaving her job as executive director of Highlands Habitat to take a similar job in DeSoto County. We hate to see her go, which is likely the sentiment others who are involved in Habitat have. Breylinger has done an an exceptional job and is apparently leaving Highlands Habitat in great shape. ...more
