A mix of emotions was evident over the weekend as parents, guardians, family members and friends gathered for one of the most significant events in a young person's life – graduating from high school. Joy, relief, sadness, excitement were no doubt felt among the approximately 700 seniors in Highlands County's three public high schools during graduation ceremonies. SEBRING — The Children's Advocacy Center could be doubling in size in the next 18 months. Jeff Roth, director of the center, announced plans for the 8,300-square-foot, $1.2 million expansion at Wednesday's Children Ser-vices Council meeting. The space, which would be added to the rear of the existing building, would allow the Department of Children and Families and Guardian Ad Litem to move their operations in the building. Roth said the centralization of services not only leads better communication between the agencies but also the economy of time due to central record keeping. ...more

Schools are custodians of our children, so any precaution they take to keep our kids safe is a welcome gesture. Take for example new dismissal procedures at Park Elementary School. Starting next year, parents or guardians who pick up the school's students are required to have a card in the dashboard that has the names of the children they will be picking up. ...more

SEBRING — Often, kids who enter the Highlands County Courthouse are more afraid of the front lobby than they are of actually going inside a courtroom. With this in mind, bailiffs at the courthouse have been celebrating the holidays by handing out stuffed animals to kids. After going through the building's metal detector and letting their items pass through an X-ray machine, children are allowed to choose a toy amongst a group of stuffed animals sitting underneath a Christmas tree. "It's been pretty successful," said bailiff William Dilling. "We had a little girl come in a few days ago who was afraid to go through the metal detector, but we were able to convince her that she'd get a (stuffed animal) out of it." ...more
