No, he wasn't faking. By Tiger Woods' final results, it would be easy to cynically and playfully suggest that maybe he really did not have knee surgery. A lot of people still believe the moon landing was successfully completed on a Hollywood sound stage. ...more

SEBRING — Although flames reached 10 to 15 feet and embers flew up to 100 yards Tuesday afternoon, firefighters kept a brush fire from causing major damage near Hammock Road. Two homes had minor soffit damage and cracked glass from the heat, and one car was destroyed between Heron and Barn Owl streets and Scrub Jay and Cardinal avenues. The fire, which burned five acres, was fully contained late Tuesday afternoon, according to Florida Division of Forestry Senior Forester Dale Armstrong. ...more

SEBRING –– Two competitors lock hand-to-hand with a glare of determination as the crowd is cheering them on. The adrenaline pours into their veins as they wait for the start. And in an instant, it's all over –– the winner is crowned and the loser takes the fall. For Sebring native Caleb Cleveland, 19, this was the scene when he took center stage at the Central Florida Armwrestling Championships in Leesburg on April 26 as he fought long odds to lift the champions trophy in the 154-pound open division. "It was everything I thought it was going to be and more," Cleveland said. "I just had to see what I was really made of." Cleveland, who works for the Golf Hammock maintenance department, had never before stepped into the organized circle of arm wrestling, but he'd been building to this point since he was a kid. ...more

SEBRING –– Another familiar face is exiting the Heartland golf scene. Colin Moffat, who has been the head professional at Golf Hammock Country Club for the past four years, has taken a position as the Director of Golf at Indian Lakes Estates Country Club in Polk County. "This is an opportunity that I couldn't pass up," said Moffat. "I'm kind of sad because I've enjoyed my time at Golf Hammock immensely, because the members are fine people and have always given me great support, but I just feel like the time is right for me to move on. "Indian Lakes Estates Country Club is a very nice layout, and I was up there last week and met more than 300 people, and I look forward to the challenges that are ahead of me." ...more

SEBRING — When Helen Bogus first brought her dog Kelly into her home in December, she never knew how many dogs she truly adopted. Even when the Golf Hammock resident heard the news from veterinarian Wendell Anderson that Kelly was pregnant, she was not ready to have puppies. When Jan. 14 came, however, Bogus and Highlands County Humane Society board member Barbara Clark spent all night with the golden retriever/Irish setter mix-breed and several kids in the neighborhood as they helped with Kelly's labor. "We just wanted Kelly," Bogus said. "We really just wanted one dog but we ended up with 14." ...more

SEBRING — Homeowners at Hammock Estates, a retirement community compromising of manufactured homes, should feel more secure if another hurricane hits. A $15 million state grant program awarded most of the 112 homeowners at the 55-and-older park money of up to $3,500 worth of improvements. The work should limit any damage from high winds. Ron VanHouten spearheaded a community-wide drive to cash in on the state program and hopes that building improvements will cut homeowner insurance rates. "Not only is their house not going to blow away, it's not going to blow over and damage a neighbor's house," said VanHouten. "It gives us peace of mind if a hurricane comes and we might have to go to a shelter, but when we get back, we'll still know our house is going to be intact." ...more
