Americans, it appears, will have health care reform whether we want it or not. And most of us don't want it, polls show. That doesn't seem to matter to Congress, which in a frenzy of deal-making came up with a near-incomprehensible mess of proposed changes to a health-care system that serves most people well. ...more

A few months ago, I warned that some folks were attempting to misuse health care reform to restrict access to abortion. They have come a long way since then, endangering the vital struggle for health care — indeed, torpedoing reform is a key goal for many involved in this effort. ...more

Jobs trump airplane After reading the story, "Unequipped pest plane idle 6 years" (front page, Dec. 20), I started shaking my head in disbelief over our local government at work. All I can say is that I hope come mosquito season the overpriced 1979 King Air finally gets in the air and does the job it was meant to do in 2003, or I say let's go back to the trucks. Harry Reid can rightly claim to be making history. If he passes health care reform, he'll depend on a series of historic "firsts." It'd be the first time Congress had passed a major new entitlement program without bipartisan support; it'd be the first time it passed such a program without popular support; and the first time it passed such a program without knowing or particularly caring what's in it. ...more

Some people seem to be obsessed with the idea that this president is going to fix everything if we just give him a chance, even though it has long been evident that he has a low opinion of this country. It is very evident whenever he gives a speech before the leaders of other countries. Is it not absurd for a sitting president to besmirch his own country before the world? We have seen the "change" but where is the "hope?" I find it hard to believe that according to some polls, Obama is still given a 40-50 percent approval rating. Much too high! ...more
