EAST LAKELAND — Garrett Deross motioned to his coaches that the ball was at eye-level after taking a called third strike to end the game, but his disgusted expression told the story of the game and Sebring's tournament. Poinciana's Tony Lima hit a two-run homer to cap off a three-run third inning, as the top-seeded team eliminated Sebring with a 7-2 win in the Dixie Youth Majors "O" Zone (ages 11-12) state tournament in East Lakeland on Sunday. LAKE PLACID — Garrett DeRoss looked over at his teammate in frustration as he watched ball four duck into the catcher's mitt. DeRoss was given first base after his second intentional walk of the inning, but his Sebring teammates made Lake Placid pay for their generosity. SEBRING — The laughs start just after the curtain goes up when "Daddy Bud" kicks the bucket in "Dearly Departed," Highlands Little Theatre's newest comedy. But this show is a little different from other Little Theatre plays – non-actor guests will grace the stage. SEBRING — Pastor Mike Karl fell down a glacier last week, but considering he did it while on a cruise to Alaska, he doesn't mind the bruise. The cruise is just one of the perks Mike and Pat Karl received after being chosen as the 2007 recipients of the Judge Clifton Kelly Champion for Children Award. The Karls have run New Testament Church and Mission for 31 years and have served people more than one million meals and housing to get them back on their feet. Now the Children's Services Council and Foundation are looking for their next "Champion for Children," whose name will be announced at the ninth annual gala, Sept. 25. ...more
