This letter is to Abie, the person who was disgusted with conservatives. I understand the frustration. Conservatives were extremely slow to realize that the Bush Administration was bad for America. In November, the majority finally opened their eyes, but why did it take so long? Because the GOP's leader Karl Rove knew he could "manipulate" conservatives with a constant stream of "fear" about gays, terrorists, immigration, environmentalists, Roe-Wade, religion and taxes. These extremists knew they could create enough smoke to keep the average conservative distracted from what was really going on in Washington. Conservatives failed to see the dismantling of the Bill of Rights, the industrial war machine's take over of our military and the almost daily immoral or illegal activities of their own party members. Yet, about 11 percent of the conservatives are still so extreme in their views that they never will see the truth. So Abie, don't fear the conservative, fear the extreme 11 percent who say "my party right or wrong." They are not good for America. Let's hope that the future proves "we the people" have learned our lesson. ...more

Regarding "Group Studies Fireworks Sales, Use" (Metro, Feb.18): The task force was a joke as evidenced that three of eight members were from the fireworks industry. Since there is an existing law banning most fireworks, the task force was not needed. Law enforcement just needs to enforce the current law. So now we will have more laws that local law enforcement agencies will not enforce. I was told by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office that they would not respond to my call regarding illegal fireworks in my neighborhood. ...more

The two netters reported caught in the Manatee River on Thursday before daylight with 700 yards of gill net, 500 pounds of fish and 100 pounds of egg on their faces made use of a classic evasion tactic to save their boat, motor and trailer. When arrested, the netters were fishing from a "borrowed" boat, and since the owner of the vessel was not involved in the infraction, the boat could not be seized, as it would have been if the owners were the perpetrators. ...more

Since its creation, I've been an active participant in each of the Lake Denton Committee meetings. It's been my shared opinion with others, this issue revolves around overcrowding at the boat ramp by scuba divers seeking certification, a lack of parking space in the immediate neighborhood for them, and some of the illicit and/or illegal activities that too often occurs in secluded areas. Working together, committee members, county employees and several other concerned people have developed a short-term plan that will reopen Lake Denton to the public. I'm glad to say they've made a lot of progress and presented the proposals to the Board of County Commissioners. However, I am very much opposed to one particular aspect of the committee's recommendation. In order to pay for (or at least offset) the costs of improvements and needed personnel, a per diver fee of $25 per day was agreed upon. This amount, after much discussion by the divers present, was deemed to be reasonable and a customary cost incurred as part of their normal certification process. This fee would be waived for the instructors and "Dive Masters" present. ...more
