AVON PARK — She would have supported the 2006 Avon Park housing ordinance. She advocates English only for government signs and ballots. And she would require all illegal aliens to return to their country. But she's not anti-Hispanic. She sponsored a house resolution urging Congress to fund the Indian River Lagoon South Restoration Project, and she supports the Everglades restoration. But she shirks the label "environmentalist." And Gayle Harrell calls Tim Mahoney an accidental congressman. "He was simply the luckiest guy around," said Harrell, who is running against two other Republicans for the 16th district nomination. "He would not be in the U.S. Congress if the Foley scandal had not happened." ...more

SEBRING — Start reading and listening, because there's a lot to learn before November. So far, nine state questions have been approved for the Nov. 4 ballot, which will also decide who will be the next president, congressman, state representatives and state senator. So get ready for a cluttered ballot. "There's always confusion on constitutional amendments," said Jennifer Davis, communications director, the Florida Department of State. And get ready for the hype, because voters will decide on gay marriage and whether illegal aliens can own land. ...more

In Tuesday May 13's paper on the front page, Jim Konkoly published a very good article titled "Mahoney Outlines Plan To End Recession." The article went on to tell of the talk Mr. Mahoney gave at the homeowners meeting on May 12. At the end of the article he talked about some of the questions that were asked and the answers that Mr. Mahoney gave. A good bit of the Mahoney plan to end the recession was based on putting the people to work in the construction industry. The first question that was asked in the question and answer session was, "How would he keep illegal aliens from taking construction jobs on public infrastructure projects aimed at putting American citizens back to work." The answer given was "We can get this problem fixed, but it cannot be a campaign issue." He said "It's not rocket science, you just have to have the will to do it." ...more

Those who oppose abortions call those who are pro-choice morally corrupt. One columnist even reasoned that there would not be illegal aliens in this country if those 50 million aborted babies had lived. Those 50 million would have jobs, thus negating the need to import illegals. With that rationale, all those policies by President Bush would be justified. Please follow this logic. Even that great conservative, President Reagan, justifiably out-sourced 5 million jobs because 20 million babies were aborted. He even penalized the taxpayers by using their taxes to fund the transfer of factories off shore. In addition, he allowed those manufacturers to take their profits off shore to avoid paying taxes and allowed them to compete with those who stayed in country for more contracts to be off shored. Who would have believed such a scenario? Not I! ...more

About every six months the population of the U.S. increases about as much as the population of Tallahassee. Who are these hundreds of thousands of new citizens? They are newborns, children of illegal aliens born in the United States - birthright citizens, "anchor babies" - not illegal aliens. This quirky legal right then allows the mother's parents and siblings to remain, and later a whole bunch of their relatives to immigrate legally. This why they are also known as "Jackpot babies." ...more

The state Senate bill called for the banning of state services for illegals, required proof of citizenship to register to vote and required state agencies to report suspected cases of people living in the country illegally. ...more
