In response to the letter by Marlene Barger titled "Grimming is Best" (Oct 18) where she states, "Recently asked city level law enforcement officers how many official meetings they have had in the past four years with the Sheriffs Office, they said zero." Even when one is staying out of politics related to the sheriff's race, one is inclined to set the record straight and make sure people vote based on true and factual information. While our meetings haven't been official, I have personally on behalf of Lake Placid Police Department been in several meetings with the sheriff's office and/or the sheriff over the past four years. ...more

In response to the answer of my last letter written on Oct. 9, where I was offering a basic Spanish course to deputies of Highlands County, and my disappointment with Sheriff Benton when I had to wait five weeks to see her and on the day of the appointment I didn't get to see her anyway, Mayr Malool defended the sheriff by saying that the sheriff was busy trying to catch a cop killer. This is an absolute untruth. I was in Highlands County when that tragedy took place. There was no manhunt going on on the day I was supposed to see the sheriff. I don't know Mayr Malool but I do know that when an officer has four or five illegals stopped at 3 a.m. and they are saying "Jump him-her, grab him-her or grab his-her gun, and the officer doesn't understand these alert words, it is dangerous. ...more

When Hurricane Wilma hit the area in 2005, they estimate their home suffered more than $100,000 damage. The Knabs say that compared to Wilma, this storm was a "nonevent." AVON PARK — Putting a temporary license tag in the rear window or anywhere other than the bracket provided for a license tag could result in a non-moving violation in the state of Florida, since a new law took effect July 1. The law is supposed to help law enforcement officers make a quick and easy identification during routine traffic stops. ...more
